Type 59-1 130 mm Towed Gun Howitzer
Reading Time: 2 minutes The Type 59-1 is a 130 mm long-range towed field gun of Chinese origin, derived from the Soviet M-46 130 mm design. It combines exceptional range, robust construction and simplicity, making it one of the most respected conventional artillery pieces of the Cold War era. The Bangladesh Army operates an estimated 72 Type 59-1 guns, sourced primarily from China, with a smaller number obtained from Kuwait—these were originally captured from the Iraqi Army during the First Gulf War (1991) and later transferred to Bangladesh as part of post-war redistribution efforts. Operational Role Long-range interdiction and counter-battery fire. Divisional and corps-level fire support, capable of engaging deep targets beyond the reach of 105 mm and 122 mm systems. Coastal and riverine defence, where the 130 mm gun’s flat trajectory can cover large distances effectively. Training and gunnery proficiency, due to the system’s mechanical reliability and range performance.
