Bangladesh has officially inaugurated its tallest national flagstand at Banglabandha, the country’s only quadrilateral land port, now flying the national flag at a record height of 117 feet, surpassing the 100-foot pole across the border in India.

The towering flagstand, equipped with an automated hoisting system, was unveiled on Tuesday afternoon in a ceremony attended by local officials, political leaders, and thousands of residents. Measuring 117 feet in height, the structure features terracotta designs reflecting Bangladesh’s rich heritage and vertical pillars symbolising the key movements that led to the country’s independence. The flag hoisted atop measures an impressive 30×18 feet.

Deputy Commissioner Md Sabet Ali, the chief guest, inaugurated the flagstand, describing it as a long-awaited aspiration fulfilled for the local youth. “On the other side of the border, their flag flies permanently. Today, that dream has finally come true for our people,” he remarked.

Other speakers at the event included Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munshi, BNP Executive Committee member Farhad Hossain Azad, district BNP convener Zaherul Islam Kachchu, National Citizen Party north zone organiser Sarjis Alam, and district Jamaat chief Iqbal Hossain, who collectively hailed the milestone as a historic moment for Panchagarh.

Ahead of the inauguration, a vibrant rally carried the national flag from the Banglabandha Customs area to the new flagstand, drawing enthusiastic participation from the local community. Organisers emphasised that the installation of the country’s tallest flagstand would not only instil national pride but also attract visitors from across Bangladesh, providing a boost to local tourism.

Banglabandha, often referred to as the gateway to Bangladesh, had long lacked a prominent flag display to match its strategic importance along the border. The new architectural landmark is designed to serve as a permanent symbol of national identity and civic pride for generations to come.

The inauguration of the 117-foot flagstand marks a symbolic assertion of national presence at a key frontier and reflects Bangladesh’s ongoing commitment to celebrating its heritage while enhancing civic infrastructure in border regions.
