It was designed to offer a balance between mobility, rate of fire and range, improving on older 122 mm designs with a modernised carriage, improved recoil arrangement and enhanced crew protection. The Type 83 is intended for divisional and brigade‑level indirect fire tasks where a reliable, rapidly‑emplaced medium‑calibre tube is required. Operational Role Provide brigade and divisional indirect fires for suppression, interdiction and counter‑battery missions. Support infantry and mechanised formations in offensive and defensive operations. Deliver close and medium‑depth interdiction along riverine, coastal and inland approaches. Serve as a primary battery for training and reserve formations due to straightforward operation and maintainability.
