Biman’s Engineering Failures Raise Safety and Oversight Concerns

Reading Time: 3 minutes A spate of technical malfunctions across Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ fleet has triggered an unprecedented crackdown on engineering staff, raising questions about safety culture, maintenance oversight, and the future reliability of the national carrier. According to records reviewed by The Daily Star, at least ten technical incidents occurred between 1 July and 13 August this year, affecting both long-haul and domestic services. The disruptions forced the grounding of four wide-body aircraft – three Boeing 787 Dreamliners and one Boeing 777 – alongside repeated malfunctions on the carrier’s Boeing 737 and Dash-8 fleets. Among the most serious episodes was a flap failure on a Dhaka–Rome Boeing 787 flight, which left 262 passengers stranded overnight in Italy. Other incidents included engine vibrations, overheating in the cabin, and recurrent defects in wheel assemblies.
