Repurposing Bangladesh’s MiG-29BM Fleet for Maritime Strike and Aggressor Roles Post-J-10CE Induction
Reading Time: 4 minutes The upcoming induction of the Chengdu J-10CE marks a transformative phase for the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF), signifying its leap into modern 4.5 generation multirole combat capabilities. As these new platforms assume frontline duties, the BAF is well-positioned to repurpose its existing MiG-29BM fighters for secondary yet vital missions. Two roles are particularly viable: (1) Maritime Strike Operations, and (2) Aggressor Training for DACT (Dissimilar Air Combat Training). This report evaluates the technical, doctrinal and operational feasibility of such a transition. Background: MiG-29BM in BAF Inventory The MiG-29s in BAF service were originally delivered in the late 1990s and underwent upgrades in Belarus to the BM standard (Bortovaya Modernizatsiya). These upgrades focused on improving avionics, radar processing, navigation, and limited smart weapon integration.
