The system is designed to provide infantry formations with high-angle indirect fire against personnel, field fortifications, weapon positions and other area targets. The E1 employs a 120 mm smooth-bore barrel mounted on a bipod and wheeled baseplate assembly. Its relatively large calibre provides considerably greater explosive effect than lighter 81 mm or 82 mm infantry mortars, while its mortar configuration allows it to engage targets behind terrain and other obstacles that may be difficult to reach with direct-fire weapons.
