MT-LB Tracked Armoured Personnel Carrier
Reading Time: 4 minutes The MT-LB (Multi-purpose Towing Vehicle Light Armoured) is one of the most versatile and widely produced tracked armoured vehicles of the Cold War era. Developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1960s as a lightweight artillery tractor and infantry carrier, it went on to serve in nearly every major conflict involving Warsaw Pact or aligned forces from Afghanistan to Ukraine. Its enduring legacy lies not in firepower or protection, but in its adaptability, low operating cost, and ease of modification. In the context of Bangladesh’s military history, the MT-LB holds a unique place. It was the first mass-acquired tracked armoured personnel carrier of the Bangladesh Army, obtained not via purchase, but as captured enemy materiel during the First Gulf War. Since then, it has served extensively in UN peacekeeping deployments, training, and support operations.
