The regiment was initially created by re-designating several battalions previously belonging to the East Bengal Regiment before recruiting and training its own men. Because it was the first new infantry regiment raised by the Bangladesh Army in the 21st century, the BIR is also known by the nickname “Regiment of the Millennium”. Headquartered at the Bangladesh Infantry Regimental Centre, Rajshahi Cantonment, the BIR currently comprises 46 battalions.
