Strengthening Bangladesh’s River Police

Reading Time: 5 minutes Introduction Bangladesh’s extensive river network, comprising over 700 rivers and spanning approximately 24,000 kilometres, is vital to the nation’s economy, transportation, and culture. However, this vast waterway system also presents unique security challenges. The River Police, established in 2013 as a specialised unit of the Bangladesh Police, is tasked with safeguarding these waterways. Yet, in recent years, manpower shortages and inadequate vessel capacity have constrained their ability to secure this vital environment. This article examines the core challenges faced by the River Police and proposes a comprehensive suite of solutions, including modernisation measures, technological integration, and enhanced inter-agency cooperation. Current Challenges 1. Manpower Shortages The River Police operates across 11 zones covering major river districts such as Narayanganj, Chandpur, Barishal, Faridpur, and Rajshahi.
