The Naval Aviation wing of the Bangladesh Navy is seeking to purchase armed multirole unmanned aerial vehicles to bolster its surveillance capabilities over the Bay of Bengal and maintain a capacity to eliminate surface threats at sea or land.

Buoyed by the success of the Baykar Bayraktar TB2 UAVs of the Bangladesh Army, the Navy too is going to maintain a fleet of advanced drones. Sources suggest the Bangladesh Navy is interested in the TB2 and TB3 drones.

Baykar, the worlds largest drone manufacturer has been developing the TB3 drones with serial production expected by 2025. The most important characteristic of the TB3 is that it can take off and land on short runways, including on ships. It is also designed to climb higher altitudes, and carry more weapons, and stay on air for longer periods than its TB2 predecessor.

The manufacturer claims the TB3 has a maximum operational range of 1,900 km (1,180 miles).

Meanwhile the Turkish manufacturer is working with the Bangladesh Army to deliver more drones to the Army Aviation Group.

Bangladesh is now seeking a complete transfer of technology, along with munitions assembly line for the armed unmanned aerial vehicles.

The mass use of UAVs in the context of Bangladesh is promising given its price point and lack of strategic depth of the country. The forces are looking to take the battlefield in to the enemy’s grounds by targeting their strategic industries and KPIs during war.

Türkiye is supplying the Bangladesh armed forces with advanced weaponry including small arms, UAVs, missile systems and communications equipment as part of a strategic agreement signed in the 1980s between the two Muslim-majority nations.
