Bangladesh is sandwiched between India and Myanmar. These nations both maintain strong naval capabilities compared to that of existing Bangladesh naval forces. Only in the past decade has the Bangladesh government realised and executed naval expansion programs to create a deterrence in the Bay of Bengal against threats from the Indian and Myanmar navies.
The country’s premier sea port is based in Chittagong. It handles 92% of the seaborne trade of Bangladesh. The area around the port is also shared by the Bangladesh Navy’s Chittagong Command or COMCHIT. It would be highly vulnerable to attack by foreign naval forces in times of war.
