Bangladesh Navy received its first Hamilton class cutters renamed BNS Somudra Joy from the US Coast Guard. Jarvis (725) after a decommissioning ceremony to be held on 23 May, 2013 in Coast Guard Island, Alameda, California. The transfer ceremony was presided over by Vice Adm. Paul F. Zukunft, Commander Coast Guard Pacific Area and Chief of Naval Staff for the Bangladesh Navy, Vice Adm. Muhammad Farid Habib.
A 20-member team from the Bangladesh Navy, led by prospective commanding officer Capt. Mohammad Nazmul Karim, arrived in Alameda in March to begin preparations to accept Jarvis (725). An additional 70 members of the Bangladeshi crew arrived in May. Up to 26 former Jarvis crew members will serve as advisors, assisting the Bangladesh crew until the BNS Somudra Joy’s departure from California later this year.
