Formed on the 5th of June 1974 by late President Ziaur Rahman as the “Presidential Security Force” this unit is an elite Bangladeshi special protection force.
In 1982 the outfits name was changed to the President Guards Regiment (PGR) by President Hussain Mohammed Ershad.
Organisation
The President Guard Regiment (PGR) is commanded by the Military Secretary to the President (MSP) who is a Brigadier General rank officer from the Bangladesh Army. Its strength is estimated to be more than a brigade and it is headquartered at the Dhaka Cantonment.
Duties
It is responsible for providing security for the President of Bangladesh and his/her immediate family in addition to performing intelligence gathering duties.
Aside from protecting the President the elite unit also protects the Prime Minister, VVIPs and visiting foreign dignitaries as well as carrying out state protocol roles.
Equipment
This elite protection force is equipped with the latest small arms, anti-tank weapons and communications systems. Typical equipment carried by PGR operatives includes HK MP5 SMG, Type 56 SMG, Type 56 LMG, Type 80 GPMG, PSL sniper rifle and 105mm recoilless rifles. Protective wear such as bulletproof vests are also worn as standard gear.
